Rodez, the Ligue 2 football club, saw one of its athletes, Oscar Cransac-Chayrigues, win the European mountain running championships. The 18-year-old athlete won three medals, including one individually. He talks about this incredible experience and his season goals. "The most important thing is done", he says. "It was the most important weekend of the season. I had qualified a month before at the French championship in Gap. From then on, I checked the date and prepared thoroughly. It went well, so I was really happy. The races went better than I expected. I was going to do my best, maybe top 10 individually. But I did better than that! I finished 3rd in the vertical race and 6th in the up-and-down race. And we won each time as a team. I didn't expect it, I was a bit surprised. But beyond that, it was an incredible experience, the culmination of four years of athletics with the club (before that, he practiced football, NDLR). Was this competition a really targeted objective, even before your qualification ? Yes. The season's objective was first to go and then to be as strong as possible there. And I had made the bet from the start of the season to try to qualify in both formats. At the French championship, I had been a bit cold, since I had finished 2nd and 4th and it was necessary to be in the first four each time. Do these results give you the desire to know new selections in the French team in the short term ? Yes, it gives me the desire. But there, I was a junior and from now on, in mountain running, there is no junior category, it's directly seniors. So it will be much more complicated to get selections with the adults. I know that in the next two or three seasons it will be very, very difficult, I will give myself the means to do my best. And then, I tell myself that I hope to get back to the French team in three, five or maybe 10 years. Beyond the European championships, what are your other season goals ? At the beginning, I was until the French cross-country championship, I was happy. After, I did the whole mountain running season and now that I've succeeded in my European championships, I'll keep going with the races. There, I just did the Rodez ekiden and this weekend, I'll do a 5,000m in Alès. I didn't prepare it much, so it will be a bit complicated, but I'll try to do a chrono to qualify for the French championship. In mountain running, there is a sequence of effort on flat, uphill and downhill. The 5,000m is just flat running, doing laps on a track. It's not my strong point, but I was in shape at the ekiden, so I think I might be able to do it. But it's a very secondary objective. Even if I qualify, I won't do anything, it's just to participate in the French championships on the track that I've never done. You're therefore staying on a victory with SRA at the ekiden, Saturday. What did you think of this meeting ? It's a different race from the others, already because it's a team race. I come from football, so it speaks to me. There's a huge enthusiasm everywhere, it's great. And then, it's a very long race, so we trained well for it.
